The Purpose of a Book Cover

excerpts from a blog by Seth Godin

Is the purpose of the cover to (1) sell books, (2) to accurately describe what's in the book, or (3) to tee up the reader so the book has maximum impact? The third.

It's the third because if the book has maximum impact, then word of mouth is created, and word of mouth is what sells your product, not the cover.

Tactically, the cover sells the back cover, the back cover sells the flap and by then you've sold the book. If those steps end up selling a book that the purchaser doesn't like, game over. So you have to be consistent all the way through and end up creating a conversation after the purchase. Books are better at creating conversations than most products (when was the last time you talked about a pool cue), but there's lots of opportunity here, no matter what you make.

Some ways that a book cover can accomplish its mission:
· Iconic (because iconic items tend to signal 'important')
· Noticeable (lots of other people own it, thus making it likely that you'll one)
· Sophisticated (this helps reinforce that the ideas inside are worthy of your time)
· Original (why bother reading a book you already know)
· Clever
· Funny
· Generic (reminding you of a genre or another book you liked not generic as in boring)
I don't know about you, but I judge books by their cover every day.

Marketing

The use of the internet is a fundamental tool for marketing a self-published book. You should really begin a following long before your book is printed. Make use of social networking sites to attract readers to your style of writing and let them know what you are working on; post some sample pages to get some feedback as well.

Establish credibility as an author by giving sound advice to other newbie writers and help promote them - then don't just market your book, market the benefits of your book. Too many folks out there will post, "Check out my book, found here..." Don't fall into that category, people won't always respond well to it, invite them with a very short note about the story, if you get visitors then, they will be genuine and more likely to buy.

Terth Willager: Age of Mythology

In my Writing page at www.kevinghare.com under Terth Willager, I have added the caption I am using for the sysnopsis on the back of the book and I also included a pdf file of the first two chapters. Hope everyone who reads will enjoy (and be enticed to buy the book!)

Terth Willager: Age of Mythology

  • Mood:
Well, not being able to secure a grant to independently publish Terth Willager, I will self-publish again and market like no tomorrow... I think I will choose CreateSpace this time any inputs on quality?

Conundrum

  • Mood:
I have recently discovered that there are seemingly no opportunities for a short-on-funds, self-employed, can't take two weeks off to take classes without losing his house, 38 year old who thinks if he had $3000 for tuition on a course, he would just independently publish the book (inhale) type of writer who has been told he has a great manuscript but doesn't feel that traditional publishing is the avenue to take...

I am referring to grant funding of course, through Canadian government or branch thereof who feel it important to tease with programs they want you to know about but can't have...
